About

Our Mission
Progressive Educator believes relationships are the bedrock of teaching and learning. We create opportunities for connecting, learning and sharing so that together we might transform our classrooms, schools, communities and public education.

Through the use of innovative tools and technologies Progressive Educator is dedicated to inspiring, training, and energizing teachers for the long haul so that we may flourish in this challenging, yet vital profession.

Our Background
After teaching in two different urban school districts in Northern California and becoming increasingly frustrated with the state of public education in the United States, Apple Distinguished Educator Matthew Callison, created Progressive Educator because he saw a need for a new form of professional and social engagement between educators.

One aspect of Callison’s vision is to create a dynamic, professional network of teachers and educators.

Many professions have been good at creating professional support networks for their members. Teachers and educators in many schools and districts do not feel a strong sense of community or support. Wanting to be part of a solution and change this dynamic, Callison created Progressive Educator’s online community. Connect is one place educators from around the country can support one another, share resources, ideas, struggles and tips, and create their own organic community.

Callison believes that teachers, united in vision and voice, could have an unbelievable impact on education policy in the United States. Seasoned, well-educated teachers are experts at teaching and learning and yet are often left out of most important education-policy decisions at local, state and federal levels across this country. Often it seems as if the people with the least amount of knowledge about teaching and learning are the ones that make most of the decisions. Our education institutions are frequently paralyzed by political rhetoric and special interests. In the end, our children (especially children of color and children of poverty) are the ones most devastated by these problems.

In addition to professional support and growth, Callison hope’s that a voice of innovation, change, and strength will be something that grows out of Progressive Educator and it’s community.
